Time to pick it up!

Kicking the Can Down the Road: Time to Pick It Up!

Ever played that game where you kick a can down the road just to see how far it goes? Fun as a child, perhaps, but as adults—especially as Stewards—it’s a pastime we can’t afford. Procrastination might be a global sport, but we’re here to retire from the league.

The Go-Getter’s Creed

At Steward. One, we’re building a movement of action-takers, not benchwarmers. We believe in rolling up our sleeves and diving headfirst into solutions. Courage, loyalty, integrity, and truthfulness aren’t just buzzwords; they’re our daily vitamins.

Traits: The Fantastic Four

  • Courage: The fuel that gets us off the couch and into the game.
  • Loyalty: The glue that keeps us committed when the going gets tough.
  • Integrity: Doing the right thing, even when no one’s watching—or, you know, Instagramming it.
  • Truthfulness: Saying the right thing, even when it’s easier to gloss over the facts or add a little glitter.

But hey, having the right traits is like having a car without gas—great, but you’re not going anywhere.

Skills: The Secret Sauce

Values set the direction, but skills get the engine running. It’s time to ask ourselves: what can we actually do?

  • Aspiring Midwives: Making the first cries of newborns a joyous symphony.
  • Tech Wizards: Developing apps that clean up the internet faster than you can say “404 Error.”
  • Environmental Gurus: Turning polluted water into something you might actually swim in.
  • Policy Makers: Crafting laws that make “nuclear-free world” more than just a Miss Universe answer.

The Never-Ending To-Do List

Air pollution, dodgy farming practices, carcinogens in your coffee—shall we go on? Animal welfare, knife crime, various addictions, overfishing, radioactive waste—the list is longer than a CVS receipt. But are these someone else’s problems? Spoiler alert: they’re not.

Waiting for a Hero? Plot Twist—It’s You!

Remember the folks who waited around for Dhul Qarnain to save them from Gog and Magog?

“He found a people who could hardly understand a word. They said, ‘O Dhul Qarnain, indeed Gog and Magog are great corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?'” (Surah Al-Kahf, 18:93-94)

They lacked understanding of their situation—rather than taking responsibility for addressing the corruption around them, they asked Dhul Qarnain to build a wall and seal off the problem. It might have seemed like a solution, but it wasn’t a long-term one. They were avoiding the real challenge: dealing with the root cause of corruption.

Dhul Qarnain helped them by building the barrier, but he made it clear that it wasn’t a permanent fix:

“This is a mercy from my Lord. But when the promise of my Lord comes to pass, He will level it to the ground. And the promise of my Lord is ever true.” (Surah Al-Kahf, 18:98)

He warned them that the wall would eventually crumble, and when Gog and Magog reappeared, they would face the same challenge again. The question was—would they be prepared next time, or would they still be waiting for someone else to step in?

Stop Passing the Buck

Waiting for a savior isn’t a strategy; it’s a delay tactic. Problems don’t vanish because we ignore them—they just get bigger shoes.

So here’s the deal: don’t let things get too late by kicking the can down the road. Instead, pick it up, do something with it, recycle it, or—if all else fails—bin it!

There, you’ve saved energy, solved a problem, and made a difference. Not too shabby for a day’s work, right?
