Key Objectives

  • Artistic awareness: Develop the fundamentals of Islamic Art in understanding geometry, free hand drawing, and writing clearly in Sudani script
  • Cultural awareness: Gain insights into understanding the principles of Islamic Arts.
  • Basic understanding and application: To be able to draw and tessellate simple patterns, understand the underlying geometry, use materials around them t make ins/stainsfor paper, to understand and make biomorphic patterns
  • Research and Observation: Carrying out research , recording findings and creating a final project piece incorporating one, two, or all of the Islamic Art principles learned in the course
  • Reading and Writing: Identify, read and write Sudani script Hausawi proficiently.

    Description

    Welcome to the accelerated Level 1 of Stewards Islamic Art curriculum. In this condensed course, students will complete the foundational curriculum at an expedited pace, incorporating additional art skills, more projects, and extensive research. The focus will be on the rich artistic traditions of West and North Africa, with a special study of Persian biomorphic forms. Throughout the year, students will work towards achieving the Silver Arts award and will compile a comprehensive portfolio showcasing their skills and knowledge.

    Term 1

    Calligraphy

    • Study the Hausawi Sudani script letters.
    • Learn how to write in Hausawi Sudani.
    • Begin reading traditional manuscripts written in Hausawi.

    Geometry

    • Examine examples of geometry in nature and architecture.
    • Learn to construct patterns based on grids.
    • Complete a 6-fold geometric pattern.

    Biomorphic Forms

    • Study examples of ornamentation in arts and architecture.
    • Learn to make pigments and mordants.
    • Practice drawing, tracing, and transferring patterns onto stained watercolor paper.
    • Study patterns from Iran.

    Term 2

    Calligraphy

    • Study a variety of Ajami and Sudani manuscripts.
    • Continue building Hausawi writing proficiency by writing different Quranic verses and other texts.

    Geometry

    • Construct a 6-fold rosette and practice making geometric shapes with paper.
    • Explore the significance of the number 4 in nature, including 4-fold patterns, step patterns, and spiral patterns.
    • Learn the language of 8’s and the surrounding patterns and shapes.
    • Construct a simple 8-pointed star and cross pattern.

    Biomorphic Forms

    • Study and create key patterns and knotwork patterns.
    • Explore Celtic and Pictish patterns.
    • Study patterns from Iran.

    Term 3

    Calligraphy

    • Engage in more detailed and advanced work building on Terms 1 & 2.

    Geometry

    • Learn to create 8-fold square rosettes.
    • Study and design Zillij patterns.
    • Complete a final project.
    • Compile journal and portfolio.

    Biomorphic Forms

    • Compile journal and prepare  portfolio for assessment.
    • Study and create ornamental patterns from Fes and Marrakech.

    Cost: £512 per year, payable in 8 monthly instalments of £64.00.

    Requirements

    • Age Group: This course is designed for students aged 13-15 years.
    • Prerequisites: No prior experience is necessary but good fine motor skills are highly recommended
    • Materials: Good quality compass set ( Jakar, Rotoring brand), 30 cm and 50/60 cm ruler, Pencils. Eraser, A3 cartridge paper pad, A3 Binder/folder, Bamboo/Reed calligraphy pen size 3 or 4, Black Sumi ink, likka/silk thread, Matt glossy paper, Paintbrush, Watercolour paper pad, Tracing paper, Masking tape, Self healing mat, Craft knife. (These must be purchased separately and independent of the course enrolment fee)

Studies with master Arabic calligraphers from the UAE, China and England in Riqa’a, Thuluth and Sudani scripts. Also studied classical Latin scripts Copperplate, Italic and Uncial scripts. Lives in Reading,UK, married with 3 children.
