    The Year 9 Maths Club is designed as an online program tailored for students who need additional support in building essential maths skills. This club provides a safe, supportive, and engaging environment where students can develop maths fluency, confidence, and problem-solving skills. The emphasis is on real-world application, enabling students to see the relevance of mathematics in everyday life. Through interactive games, peer collaboration, and personalised instruction, the club helps students improve their understanding of core concepts while making maths an enjoyable subject.

    Term 1: Building Foundations and Confidence

    In Term 1, the focus is on laying a strong mathematical foundation and building students’ confidence in core skills. The term starts with a baseline assessment to identify each student’s strengths and areas for improvement. The lessons then focus on number skills, fractions, decimals, percentages, basic algebra, and geometry.

    A major emphasis is placed on developing maths fluency through regular practice drills and interactive activities like games, puzzles, and real-life maths challenges. Students also begin developing their maths vocabulary and communication skills through group discussions and problem-solving presentations. A growth mindset is introduced to help students see mistakes as a natural part of learning.

    Key Topics:

    • Diagnostic baseline assessment and goal setting.
    • Number skills (factors, multiples, primes).
    • Fractions, decimals, and percentages.
    • Algebraic expressions and equations.
    • Geometry basics (shapes, angles, properties).
    • Maths vocabulary and communication.

    Real-World Application: Students solve real-world problems such as budgeting, converting measurements, and exploring geometric shapes in everyday objects.

    Term 2: Enhancing Problem-Solving and Reasoning Skills (Jan 10 – Mar 30)

    In Term 2, students focus on developing deeper conceptual understanding and enhancing problem-solving strategies. They explore algebraic expressions, ratios and proportions, and transformations in geometry. This term encourages students to approach problems from different angles, promoting flexible thinking. The concrete-pictorial-abstract (CPA) approach is emphasized, particularly in visualizing algebra and geometry concepts.

    Students engage in peer tutoring and group problem-solving to deepen understanding. Weekly fluency drills continue to strengthen basic maths operations, while more advanced algebra and geometry concepts are introduced.

    • Problem-solving strategies and reasoning.
    • Expanding and factorising algebraic expressions.
    • Ratios and proportions.
    • Geometry transformations (translations, reflections, rotations).
    • Data handling and probability (collecting and analyzing data).

    Real-World Application: Students work on real-world tasks such as using ratios in recipes, analyzing data from surveys, and exploring geometric transformations in design.

    Term 3: Application and Mastery (Apr 15 – July 18)

    In the final term, the focus shifts to applying and mastering the concepts learned in earlier terms. Students tackle more complex algebraic topics, including simultaneous equations and quadratic equations, while continuing to explore geometry concepts like circles and trigonometry.

    This term also places a strong emphasis on real-world application and project-based learning. Students will work on projects that require them to apply maths to real-life scenarios, such as designing a model or analyzing patterns in nature. Regular reflection sessions help students consolidate their learning, while maths challenges and group activities ensure the club remains engaging and collaborative.

    • Solving simultaneous equations.
    • Geometry (circles, area, circumference).
    • Basic trigonometry.
    • Quadratic equations.
    • Extended problem-solving and reasoning.

    Real-World Application: Students engage in projects like designing geometric models, using trigonometry to measure heights, and solving real-life problems using simultaneous equations.

    Cost: £250 per year, payable in 10 monthly instalments of £25.00.

    Requirements

    • Age Group: This course is designed for students aged 13-14 years.
    • Prerequisites: Students should have a good grasp of the four operations addition, long multiplication and division, understand place value and basic fractions.
