For age 10 – 14.
Week 1 & 2: Hand sewing skills and simple repairs
In this module, students will learn how to sew correctly and effectively using a hand sewing needle. They will be taught skills including:
- How to thread a needle easily
- How to use hand sewing neatly and effectively to mimic a sewing machine
- Different hand stitches and their recommended uses
Students will also learn basic garment repair, both sewn by machine and by hand; emphasis will be on hand sewing though. This will include:
- Repairing buttons and buttonholes
- Repairing a simple hem
- Repairing holes in garments via sewing or patching
- How to professionally repair garments
Week 3 & 4: Introduction to the sewing machine, practical sewing techniques
In this module, the basics of how to thread, use and care for a sewing machine will be demonstrated. All students will have the opportunity to use it.
Students will also learn multiple practical sewing fundamentals including:
- How to put elastic in a garment (skirt)
- How to attach a pocket to a garment
- How to install a zipper
Week 5 & 6: Project
In this module, students will begin their first official sewing project.
There will be a choice between either a tote bag or a pencil case.
Students will be given the opportunity to use a sewing machine, but the project will be focused more on hand sewing.
