This primary maths curriculum is carefully designed for a combination class of Year 5 and 6 equivalent to Grades 4 and 5 in the US). This comprehensive 33-week primary maths program is meticulously crafted to cover the UK the Year 5 & 6 UK National Curriculum and align to US Common Core State Standards for Grades 4-6. The course offers a unique global perspective, providing students with the mathematical skills and confidence needed to excel in secondary school, whether in the UK, the US, or anywhere else in the world. Emphasizing fluency in core mathematical concepts, problem-solving abilities, and the application of knowledge in real-world contexts, the program is enriched with cross-curricular connections to English, History, Art, and Geography. It also supports the development of critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and the ability to navigate both metric and imperial systems, making students globally competent and adaptable learners.
Term 1: Foundations of Mathematics
This term focuses on establishing a strong foundation in key mathematical concepts. Students will deepen their understanding of number sense and place value, master the four operations with whole numbers and decimals, and explore the basics of fractions, decimals, and percentages. The term also introduces fundamental geometric concepts and the basics of algebraic thinking. By the end of this term, students will have a solid grounding in essential mathematical skills, ready to build on these in subsequent terms.
Term 2: Exploring Mathematical Concepts
In this term, students will delve deeper into previously introduced concepts, with an emphasis on fractions, decimals, and percentages. They will be introduced to ratios and proportions, developing their ability to solve more complex problems. Advanced geometric reasoning and data handling skills will also be explored. This term aims to enhance students’ mathematical understanding and problem-solving abilities, preparing them for more advanced topics.
Term 3: Mastery and Application
The final term is dedicated to mastering complex problem-solving and reasoning skills, ensuring students are thoroughly prepared for secondary school mathematics. It consolidates and extends understanding of all key topics covered throughout the year. Students will revisit number and place value, operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, geometry, algebra, measurement, and data analysis. The term includes comprehensive project work and practical applications, providing students with the confidence and skills needed for secondary school success.
