This course is designed to take students age 9 – 12 years on a journey through the essentials of essay writing. Each week, they’ll explore a different aspect of essay writing, from brainstorming and planning to drafting, revising, and polishing their essays. The course is packed with fun activities that will help students build on their knowledge with hands-on activities, interactive lessons, and practical exercises. By the end of the course, students would have developed a strong foundation in essay writing, gaining the confidence to craft well-structured essays on a variety of topics. They’ll also learn how to analyze prompts, organize their thoughts, and effectively communicate their ideas, making their writing both impactful and persuasive.
Term 1: Foundations of Essay Writing
In the first term, students will focus on building a strong foundation in essay writing. This term is designed to introduce the basic components of essays, including structure, thesis statements, and paragraph development. Students will also begin exploring narrative and descriptive essays, learning how to craft engaging stories and vivid descriptions. By the end of this term, students will be comfortable with the essential elements of essay writing and will have written their first full-length essays.
Term 2: Expanding Essay Writing Skills
The second term delves deeper into essay writing by expanding students’ skills in various essay types. This term will focus on argumentative and persuasive essays, where students will learn to develop strong arguments and use evidence effectively. Additionally, students will explore expository essays, understanding how to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely. By the end of this term, students will have a broader understanding of different essay types and be able to write essays that are both convincing and informative.
Term 3: Refining and Perfecting Essay Writing
The final term is dedicated to refining and perfecting students’ essay writing skills. This term emphasizes revision and editing techniques, helping students improve the clarity, style, and correctness of their essays. Students will also engage in peer review sessions, learning to give and receive constructive feedback. The term concludes with an exploration of creative writing in essays, allowing students to blend different essay types and experiment with their writing style. The course concludes with final portfolio presentations by the students as well as general presentation of original pieces.
Cost: £300 per year, payable in 10 monthly instalments of £30.00.
