Designed for Year 7-8 students, this 38-week programme aims to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the exciting and innovative world of design technology. Students will learn about the role of design in everyday life as well as an overview of design principles and process. Each lesson has been designed to be engaging, thought provoking and practical in order to uncover and develop the students’ creativity, problem-solving skills, and technical proficiency.
Throughout this course, students will:
- Learn about Design Thinking as a methodology, including ideas generation, problem solving and ideation techniques as well as sketching, modelling, and prototyping as a way of communicating an idea.
- Learn about the importance of resilience and failing as behaviours within design and the creative process.
- Gain an introduction to graphic design, typography and logo design.
- Gain an introduction to technical drawing including orthographic projection and exploded view drawing as well as drawing to scale and specification.
- Explore materials and their properties, learning about different materials and evaluating their uses and benefits.
- Learn about the environment and sustainability in which we will cover the environmental consequences and impacts of the materials we use, as well as the ethics of those choices through topics such ‘fast fashion’ and upcycling and recycling.
- Gain an appreciation of the practical application of Maths and Physics within design.
Each of these topic areas will be supported through weekly homework to reinforce the learning from the classroom.
