This course is designed to develop students’ creative writing skills, enhance their ability to write clearly and effectively, and prepare them for GCSE and IGCSE English Language exams. The course focuses on fostering creativity, overcoming writing blocks, and mastering the art of writing succinctly, descriptively, and with precision. Students will have opportunities to present their work and engage in peer review sessions, building their confidence and critical thinking skills. Release the writer within is both suitable for KS3 students developing their writing skills and GCSE students wanting to strengthen their writing skills to do well on their exams.Ā
Term 1: Foundation and Exploration
In the first term, students focus on laying a strong foundation in creative writing. The term begins with introductory activities to spark creativity and overcome writing blocks. Students learn the importance of writing clearly and effectively, and they explore the basics of descriptive writing, character development, and narrative structure. Emphasis is placed on using sensory details, crafting vivid settings, and developing engaging characters. The term concludes with exercises on writing dialogue and understanding the audience, preparing students to write with purpose and intention.
Term 2: Skill Development and Application
The second term is dedicated to honing specific writing skills and applying them in various contexts. Students delve into the art of revision, learn to write precisely, and experiment with different genres, including flash fiction. The term includes focused lessons on writing compelling beginnings and endings, building suspense, and using figurative language to enhance their writing. Peer review sessions become more frequent, allowing students to give and receive constructive feedback. By the end of this term, students are encouraged to create original pieces, further developing their unique voice and tone.
Term 3: Exam Preparation and Presentation
In the final term, students shift their focus towards exam preparation and showcasing their work. They practice structuring responses for GCSE and IGCSE exams, develop persuasive and argumentative writing skills, and learn to write narratives with embedded themes and messages. The term also includes public speaking exercises to prepare students for presenting their work. Writing under timed conditions is emphasized to simulate exam scenarios. The course concludes with final presentations of original pieces, peer review and polishing sessions, and a celebration of the studentsā writing achievements.
Cost: Ā£300 per year, payable in 10 monthly instalments of Ā£30.00.
